Paul W. Howes, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychology

Advocating for children and families since 1989

I am a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice.  I have been providing outpatient psychotherapy in the Fairport community since 1989, and my clients vary in age from pre-schoolers to senior citizens.  Presenting problems I address include depression, anxiety, bipolar illness, ADHD, family conflict, couples’ therapy, coping with separation and divorce, adoption issues, managing grief, and child behavioral issues.  While I generally meet with individuals, I maintain a wholistic and family perspective in addressing client concerns.

My theoretical orientation in approaching my work is an integration and collaboration of family systems, developmental psychopathology, attachment, and humanistic theories and perspectives.  On the continuum of therapists who provide counsel (advice) to those who provide therapy (self-directed insight), I fall more on the side of providing therapy and self discovery, as I believe every client has the capacity for growth.  I find it’s more helpful to facilitate clients identifying and removing barriers to natural growth than it is telling them what they should do, as every individual has an innate capacity for productive development no matter their age.

Practicing in Fairport since 1989

Initially, my career focused primarily on child clients, consistent with my doctoral training.  However, you can’t work with children without also working with adults, and my practice grew and expanded to include more and more adult work as my clients aged along with me.

Clients of all ages

I work with child clients as young as 5 years old to adult clients in their 70’s.  While I generally meet with individuals, I maintain a holistic and family perspective in addressing all client concerns.

Therapy and Self Discovery

My goal is to foster a cooperative and interactive relationship with each client, where I try to engage my knowledge and experience in concert with them being an expert on themselves. I find it’s more helpful to facilitate clients identifying and removing barriers to natural growth than it is telling them what they should do.

New Client Referrals

First contact with me is best made through a phone message at the number above.  I will return your call to discuss availability for both of us, as well as a brief discussion to clarify that you are asking for help in an area where I have expertise and experience.  Introductions are best made by phone rather than email to facilitate a more personal discussion. My availability is limited, but if I can’t be helpful personally I will try to make suggestions for other providers who might be a good fit.
